About Havanese

The Havanese Breed is meant for companionship. They are a toy breed and are hypoallergenic.  They encompass the best qualities of a large breed and toy breed temperaments. They are playful, intelligent, and easy to train. They love to be with their owners and other animals. They love with all their heart.  The variety of coloring they produce is fun and beautiful.  This breed can be very playful as well as snuggling on the couch for movie time.  They are known for their silky hair and are considered non-shedding.

Why do males get such a bad wrap?

Choosing gender is an interesting topic. I am amazed to hear people say they have always had females so they will only have females.  Or "Males mark". This is interesting to me as a breeder as I have found males to be more affectionate than females.  Males always want to cuddle whereas females tend to be more independent and love a good cuddle but then they like their downtime.

I have heard it described by many other breeders that males are in love with you and females love you. I have found that to be very true in my experience.

On more than one occasion I have had people insist they want a female and then end up choosing a male.  They are so happy they did.  And now they only want males. This breed will be loving and imprint with its owner no matter the gender. It is just unfortunate that males get such a bad wrap.

Myth: Marking is only a male thing.

Fact: Females mark just as much as males.  This is a dominance/hormone issue, not a gender issue. A non-intact male will not mark any more than a female.  An intact male will mark if there is a female in heat around.  That is the drive from their hormones. It is important to potty train properly and not allow this behavior from either gender.
